Update: Car Over-heat!

hello everyone, here's the update, my mom let me borrow her car as of yesterday, and i was able to go to school and go to work, although she lives about 2 hours away, i was glad my parents could help me, as i was very concerned. I paid about $130 to have the car towed to a mechanic who's a relative of mine (i dont really know him) and guess what he said?? he replaced my waterpump, timing belt, and some other things, he said the headgasket was fine, and the engine is still good (160,000 miles on the odometer), in the end, he's asking for $500. What do you guys think? I might go get it tomorrow morning

About the usual price for all that. Stealer here charges $300 for the belt or $400 for the pump and belt. Plus shop charges, etc.

You're lucky to have a mechanic relative. Give it a good check up before you send it back on the road, that way you'll know everything is checked.

^yeah i know, hopefully it's still good and lasts for many miles to come! yes my situation was very awkward, I was sure the gasket is blown! but i guess we'll have to wait and see tomorrow when i go get it. As some other people said earlier, is it possible that the ecu cut the spark before anything serious happened?(blown headgasket) when i start the car that night, I did notice "white" smoke from the tail pipe, it was as WHITE as white can be, i've never seen it so white like that before, and it cranked more difficult than normal when i turn the ignitioin, but as 94_rolla said, the 7afe gasket is a multilayer steel gasket, im not sure about the 4afe though, all and all, thank you punter and to those who've helped, i greatly appreciate your concern, we'll see when i get the car tomorrow

With enough luck your white smoke may simply be condensation since you mentioned you started the car at night. Best of luck.

AE92 Get it in writing.

Rice, I'm telling you, if that head gasket survived, it would be a complete miracle. Get it in writing that if the head gasket acts up in the first couple of weeks, he'll fix it, on his dime. Steam, brown coolant and mayo in the crankcase are all the harbangers of a head gasket.

If he'll stake his own money, I'd go for it. otherwise, your wasting your money.

^ I'm with him on this. It would indeed be a miracle. My car boiled its water out, never seized the engine, drove it with no stress to the nearest gasstation and let it cool down and put in new water and I had a blown head gasket. AT NO TIME was there oil in my coolant, was the coolant turned brown, was there mayonnaise, or anything that would indicate a blown gasket, but it was a goner.

I dont get your fear of changing the gasket, its really frigging easy, just have the head surface machined flat before you put the new one in. I mean, trying to avoid the headgasket swap, by telling yourself "its ok, my mechanic said its ok"or whatever is really dumb. Yöu cant necessarily tell a blown HG from a compression check, that only is applicable when the HG is blown so that cylinder pressure escapes to the waterjacket. HG can also blow so that you lose pressure in the cooling system, but compression is still ok. Thats why my car still went like bat out of hell after I blew the gasket and my compression was good.

7A-FE might have a multilayer steel gasket, 4A-F/FE have a mass gasket.

No he overheated his engine to the point where it seized. So someone told him his headgasket would be blown. (which is a very reasoble asumption.)

Just curious, what did the compression check out to in each cylinder? From the description in the previous post, I would have bet money the head gasket was toast.

The mechanic did run a compression test, right???

One thing about head gaskets and compression tests. While unusual, it's possible to get a leak between a water passage and an oil passage without affecting the compression. So watch both your oil and coolant for contamination for a while when you get it back.

Update: hey guys, just got the car, it runs great, he changed the timing belt and some tensioner i think, water pump too and some other things, im not sure about the compression check, but he said the head gasket is fine, you need to take out the block cover to do the timing belt, right? so i assume he took a look at the gasket, i'll take his word for it, strangely there is no white smoke coming from the tail pipe, yeah strangely, the car is running fine, so i dunno what was wrong with it, hopefully it's back to normal, we'll see a couple months from now, all and all, thank you everyone who gave their opinions and helping me

No you have to take the covers off to do the belt, not the head.
Compression or leakdown test is the only real way to tell, but if hes confident then thats cool just take it back if it breaks again.
