convert 4af internal coil to external

Ive been reading a bit about converting the 4af internal ignition coil to run from an external coil but I just need to know exactly which wires go where. Ive seen some not so up-close pics of the setups and cant figure out the instructions on how to do it since most are so vague. Ive taken apart an old distributor/coil assembly and I know half way what to do (as far as needing to fabricate a cable from the external coil to the distributor). I just need to know which wires go to where w/ an external coil setup. Any really good links might help too.

Yes its possible, but I dont see the point. The internal coil is plenty powerful. Plus with the external coil you have to modify the distributor cap to accept a 5th terminal. Doing it just to get an external coil is just a waste of effort.

I guess watercooling my computer is a waste of effort to some if I dont overclock it much...but hey, I like to do different things . I think I got it mostly figured out though.

what does a fuking computer have to do with a car dude??? you can't even compare the two.. maybe in certain ways.

OK OK.. since you're in the topic of water cooling, doing what you want to do is like water cooling a p266mhz...

Yea and then not even overclocking it.

Seriously switching ot an external coil won't give you any gains on a standard motor.

Figured I would get the easier stuff out of the way first, then get to the block/head later since thats where most the power increase comes from. I am big on DIY mods and tinkering just for the self satisfaction and stuff. But yeah, I think Im going to get one of those adaptors from MSD or make my own adapter, Ive pretty much figured out the whole electrical wiring part. I think the carb/intake is the next thing on my list to mess with after the electricals.

I'd put my effort into something else, really the stock coil is actually more powerful than most aftermarket coils, and it really doesnt need to be modified, especially if you just have the basic intake exhaust mods. Leave that shit alone.
Now, I'm not just implying you, and this isnt meant to be an offending statement, but alot of n00bies are being quite dense on this forum and rather than listening to advice from us long timers, do dumb stuff and then come crying things like "I think I just fucked up my car". Listen to us and take our advice, its free and it'll keep you people out of trouble.

PS. Changing to an external coil gives you 0hp gain.

and to be quite honest.... when i did my 4age swap i added an MSD 6al, blaster 2 coil, and 8910 eis tach adapter... it caused my ignitor to blow several times

i ripped that all out and put in a stock 4age (from an mr2) coil, and not only did performance get better, gas mileage got better, idle got better, and i stopped blowing ignitors

Yup, because the stock ignitor is meant for stock system. My system has a separate bosch type ignitor and a computer box controlling it. then again its a 300+ euro system.
And when your ignitor blows in the middle of bumfuck-nowhere, its really not fun to wait for a tow truck for hours.

well...

I passed by and saw this post and i decided to give my 2cents.. here i go..

MY girfriends celica st (92) has a 4afe ...the other day her car died.. and it was because of the stock igniter inside of the distr. She dint wanted to spend..220 in a distr. ... neither do i.. so i got a MSD BLASTER SS coil a MSD POWER TOWER (is supposed to be for chevy HEI distributor caps to convert them to External coil NOT for hondas but they work in whatever situation). After that.. i went to autozone (i work there) and bought a chevy HEI module ... in parts.. i spent around $65... now i am doind the wiring on it to make it run. I think if you know about ignition systems, and have time, is worth it.

The Chevy HEI module has a lifetime warranty.. and i mount it in an aluminum bracket near the driver side headlight so it get a lot of air.. Is easy to replace, cheap $15 and ast long. The msd ss coil.. "its suppose" to give up to 48kv ..i have it mount near the module... Again it's easy to replace and only $45.

The bad part of it is that you have to drill the stock cap and deal with the wiring, but once you get it to work it runs like the stock ign system.. or may be better. I would prefer a fresh distributor from toyota..but money wise i think is a good upgrade from the old stock distb.

Before you guys start complaining about what i said.. remember is my opinion , and try to treat me with respect. is not the first time that i do this .. i did it in my uncle's 98 mitsubishi diamante v6 3.5 and everything works perfect(tach etc), i did it because the ign coil inside the distributor died with just 105k miles.. and they dont sell just the coil. you have to buy the entire unit. Again it cost my uncle 75 dollars (around).. and the remanufactured distributor usually runs around $280.

At least it sounds good to me. About it's performance.. i prefer the msd ss blaster coil (or whatever blaster coil with around 48kv) versus the old stock coil. But again if you give me the choice between a BRAND NEW IN BOX.. toyota distributor... and a setup like the one i did,, i prefer the toyota unit.. i prefer the toyota if is from the dealer.. not a remanufactured.. or other part.

I hope it helps.. if you guys want the wiring when i am finished .. i will post what to do hopefully with pics.. i have to go to school tomorrow plus i work in the afternoon so i dont know exactly when i am going to finish.

Good luck..
