ok i was told the rear struts on my 95 corolla need to be replaced. they told me it will cost like 640 in parts and 140ish in labor. i can tell that is WAY off. can someone tell me what it should cost for real to get them replaced?
Thanks,
Josh
Did you get a written estimate? What parts are to be replaced? $640 is too high if the only replaced parts are two struts. $90 would be a better guess. If it turns out to be struts and coils springs and strut mount plates, that's going to be more. And you may need an alignment after the work is done, although there may be nothing adjustable on the rear.
You'd be better off getting a number-of-hours estimate from the forum members and then translate that to a price based on dollars per hour that is charged in your area. As a hobby mechanic, I probably would take all day to do such a job!

it just said on the paper "rear struts and strut mounts" and i wouldn't doubt if they were lying about the mounts
KYB struts are about $70 a pop, plus install I would say about $250-300 would be more realistic. Go to a different shop dude, and buy your own shocks from a parts place and get them installed.

thanks, and yeah thats what i was planing on doing
I replaced 4 struts last year. I paid about $160 for the struts from Autozone. I rented the spring compressor. I did it while sick on sever pain meds, so a health guy should not have to much of a problem. Just follow the directions from a manual, also Autozone.com has the repair info and you can print it from the website.
BTW, the shop wanted $850 to do the job..

Is $640 a dealer price? Because I found that for suspension parts, Toyota and others differ a lot more than usual. For example, Toyota wanted $170 for a front upper strut bushing & bearing that was $27-40 everywhere else.
