grinding gears?

94' corolla 7afe 5-speed, it seems to be grinding in 2nd and 3rd gear, when i put it in 2nd, its a lil hard sometimes and i hear about a 1 second "grinding" noise and I could feel it on my shift knob too, same thing in 3rd gear. The rest of the gears are fine except for Reverse, which doesn't seem like it wants to go all the way in when i shove the shifter in, I'd have to try it a few times to actually get it all the way in (Reverse)

Would I be fine for the next year or so? or watsup with my transmission?? shouldn't the gear oil last the life of the car? manual transmission dont have transmission oil, right? ok thanks for any feedback

Transmission DO have oil in them, and not changing it is the #1 over looked reason for a failed transmission. So many people could save on transmission repair bills if they had just changed the tranny oil as part of maintenance.

Hurry up and change your transmission fluid asap. It'll only get worse if you don't. It may around be too late as you're grinding gears (most likely from worn out synchros from lack of proper lubrication).

Your reverse gear doesn't have a synchro, which is why you just have to get the gears to line up right by trying a few times before it slides in.

The transmission DOES have fluid in it!!! and it is NOT a lifetime fluid, i would get to changing it pronto now!! the book calls for a transmission fluid change every 24,000 Km's the fill is 2.7 liters of 75W 90 and use a good quality of fluid.

ok, thanks guys, i will look into it when i get home from school, I was confused because i asked this question last year and some guys in here said that I have gear oil, well actually i asked where the dipstick to my transmission was, and they said since i have a manual, i hear gear oil, and i should not worry about it because it lasts the life of the car

well, was looking into the haynes manual and they called it Transaxle Fluid, does that sound right? yeah, and it seems like a hectic job, they're saying to replace the filter and put a new gasket?? and i didn't see where to pour the new fluid in, ahhh...confusing...

there is no filter or gasket to change with a Manual!!!!

Id go back and look at the MANUAL TRANSAXLE section (chapter 7, Section A) its not much harder than changing your oil!

The proper oil to use is 75W 90 GL-5 fluid, use a good quality fluid! And avoid fluids with limited slip additives and hypoid additives the transmissions like it more without all that extra junk!
