Identifying an AE101/AE102

Hello,

I have a 1996 Corolla DX plus from Canada but I am having trouble identifying if it is an AE101 or 102. It says it is an AE101 from the certification label located near the driver's side door and the one on the bottom side of the hood. However, I believe a DX means an AE102, and my car has power steering, which I heard is only available on AE102. Also, there's no engine number stamped on my engine except for a very tiny, white "7A-FE" sticker on some black plastic component near the engine.

I am wondering if you can tell by the look of the engine whether it is a 4A-FE or a 7A-FE. Is there any way that I can find out?

Thanks a lot!

It is my understanding that any car with the 7A-FE is a 102 and any car with the 4A-FE is a 101???? thats what i thought it really doesn't matter as i dont think theres any difference

1.8 liter has a aluminum stiffener that bolts to the bottom of the engine and to the transmission leaving a small black oil pan at the very bottom of the engine while the 1.6 has an all steel oil pan
right across the bottom off the engine..

AND / OR

check the source look on the front right of the engine block, (right up against the tranny) about halfway down theres a flatspot that will give ya the real block code (7a / 4a)

Thanks a lot for the reply! The user manual says exactly where the engine number is stamped at the front right of the engine. I checked that spot on my engine but did not see anything. It looks like the stamp is removed or something. I am wondering if my car is an AE101 that has a 7A-FE swap. I don't know too much about engines. Can somebody please post some pictures and show me where exactly I should be looking to identify the engine? And does anyone know if an AE101 comes with power steering?

try cleaning that patch with a wire brush or something because it is there. its always hard to see its written sideways top to bottom with the bottom of the lettering facing the passangers side!

If you still can't see it check the oil pans as the 1.8 liter has a aluminum stiffener that bolts to the bottom of the engine and to the transmission leaving a small black oil pan at the very bottom of the engine while the 1.6 has an all steel oil pan
right across the bottom off the engine..

Check the area close to the distributor cap. There should be something there that says 4A-FE or 7A-FE.

Rolla_Guy is on the money, as you walk up to the car there's a flat spot right by the transmission with the code stamped into the block. Easy to see, about 2" tall.
