Reading codes

I was just wondering is there anyway to read engine trouble codes on my 89 Sr5. I was wondering because my Corolla has a diagnostic box like my Supra (which you can use to read codes) but there is not check engine light to read the codes from? If you can read codes which 2 terminals to you jumper and where do you read the codes from?

I just read mine, and had no faults to read..
the mechanic I took it too also looked, and found no problems either.

This may sound like a really stupid question or comment, but in all the years I have been driving my 89 SR5 I have never seen a check engine light. where is this light located on the dash?
