Unhappy 7afe to 4age...HELP!

Alright, here's the deal. I own a 1996 Corolla w/ the 7afe engine. I've done some research and discovered that putting the 4age into isn't too far-fetched of an idea, but I have no clue what exactly I'm doing. All my buddies are Mazda guys and they don't know their way around Toyota's too well. Right now I'm watching 3 engines on ebay, and I need to know which one to really pursue. Is this engine a simple plug-and-play, where if I get the ECU, wiring harness, and all the extra gadgets, all I have to do is pull the old one, put in the new one and hook it up? Or am I going to need to re-wire and fit all new electronics? I ask this mainly because I've found two engines with all the goodies, ECU, distributor, wiring harness, etc, and one with nothing but a hacked up wiring harness. Any advice? Thanks guys.

ha...no. Sorry, here in TN, we don't care about smog. I intend on removing any emission control anyways, seeing how it reduces performance. This car is no longer going to be my daily driver and will be a track day car, anyways. SCCA solo comp.

the million dollar question.. what motor do I put in my Corolla. I swear this question pops up once a day.

Yes, any 4AGE will fit, yes you will have to rewire, yes its not going to be easy.

Which 4AGE you're looking at?? 16V, 20V ST, 20V BT?? either way they all involve about the same type of work but I think the 20Vs would be the hardest to put in and work out the bugs and you would probably end up upgrading things here and there.

USA mounts

i have a 94 geo prizm and all my 4afe mount that came in the car bolt up to my 20v bt. the side mounts needed the brackets off the old block and i had to shave the plastin timing belt cover to fit the bracket but other than that the bolt up. the wiring is a night mare but as long as you have the wiring diagram from both cars you can just splice em. on the black top motor toyota encorporated the part of the body harness in with the engine harness so it is really hard to seperate them out

What do you mean by "modified ecu"? Anyways, I have the 7afe engine...would that work about the same?

yeah im pretty sure the only difference between the 4afe and the 7afe is the block is taller due to the longer stroke by the way how do you get this modified ecu

you don't get the modified ecu.... you modify it.... i didn't do mine, but if i get a spare 4afe ecu (early model) i will know how to do it, and will do the same for $50 to any ecu sent to me.

anyone with a spare early (90/91) ecu from a 4AFE who is willing to ship it to me, i will do for free (FIRST ONE ONLY...... THIS IS SO I CAN FIGURE OUT HOW MINE WAS MODIFIED... ie learn the secret). I wasn't at the place when mine was modified, but i know *what* was modified in general.

basically all that gets done is slow the clock speed to lengthen the allowable rpm (ie, higher limiter). Since these are map based systems, and if you use a set of smallport fuel injectors (which are high ohm), a good map reading, and a good o2 sensor, the ecu will run a 4age just fine. My 4afe ecu revs to 7800 rpm's... higher than a stock aw11, ae86, or ae92 gts
