98 Corolla, knocking noise

Hello all! I have been hearing this knocking noise in my girlfriends Corolla and it sounds like it is coming from the front of the engine but can't really tell if it's internal. I have checked everything in the rotating assembly and everything seems tight, including the belt tensioner. It kinda sounds like something is loose but it doesn't do it all the time. I am guessing it has something to do with the timing chain or something in the vavle train. Any ideas? I don't know much about Toyota's, and the car has about 160K miles on it.

might want to check the valve clearances, i have a funky noise that is about the same. Useful tool to have is a mechanic's stethoscope, will let you track the noise quite accurately

^^^ Thanks man, I will remove the valve cover and chack that when I have a chance. Has anyone else ever heard of these issues? Find out what the problem was?

I figured out it is the power steering pump. Thanks for the help 94_rolla_guy.
