I need help (well my car does)

If you've been reading my posts. I just bought this car and will begin all necessary repairs.
My check engine light is on, does anyone have the little wires to find out why its on?
Im hearing a whinning noise from behind the dash (especially when its cold). When it makes this noise the speedometer starts twitching. Is it easy to open up the dash?
When idle my car is at 600rpm, is that normal?
As you can see i have quite a handfull of problems and I think I'll find more. Can anyone help? Im hoping this car is worth it and I hope it will last a while longer.

No worries White_SR5, I have faced all these problems on my SR5. I always had the RPM problem, I personally thought it was because I took the factory Air box, but then I realized that these car change RPM reading according to the weather. All you have to do is adjust the RPM with an Alankey..

The whinning noise I have in the winter too, it's something to do with the air ducts, if you turn the air off you will not hear the whinning noise anymore.

The speedometer also twitches on my car, I've already asked my mechanic about it, and he said it is probably the cable that goes into the speedometer.. These cars are notorious for that!

your speedometer twitches.. is it a really high pitched noise.. like something grinding??? LOL cuz I have that too! it's the cable for sure.

talk about rpm changes... my car stays at 2000 if its really cold.. then around 1500 if it's a little warmer.. today it's like 0 outside.. so it's been at 1000 all the time.. I think it's the computer adjusting the idle according to how hot/cold the car is.. probably because of a stuck thermostat.. which I already know I need. which is why I made the cold air deflectors.. too lazy to get the thermostat changed.. (too cold anyways).

Hey white_sr5, I've already spent more than $2000 fixing my car, and it's not even finished yet, mine is in pretty good condition, and only last summer I started getting rust.. it had NONE when I bought the car in january of last year. So far about $900 for fixing/upgrading suspension (I chose to upgrade springs to lowered springs anyways.. otherwise it would be about $500 for the KYB struts installed) about $420 for a new rad and oil cooler lines, about $350 for tires, $120 for cap, rotor and wires and many other miscellaneous things.
Next on my list are: getting the clutch kit installed, which I already bought OEM at about $200 (got a nice discount on it), Thermostat replacement, Fuel filter replacement (which might cost a bit, depending on whether or not I have to replace the fuel line too, since the last owner didnt replace the fuel filter when he was supposed to). Also getting the car repainted is on the list.. which is not really necessary if you don't care what your car looks like, but I don't want my car rusting away.

You're not alone man.. my car runs ok, but I know I'm in for it if I want my car to run and look like 1owner's car.. A1 condition! (you gotta see his car! )

Ya, on Monday morning when it was friggin cold my speedo cable or something related made the loudest most annoying grinding noise. It lasted about 2 or 3 minutes and then stopped. I couldn't believe how loud it was! I'm just going to ignore it since I'm quite certain it was caused by the extreme cold and doesn't affect the performance of the car in any way. Any other AE92ers have this problem?

yea what they say!

to add a lil info...
at cold start, 4AGE should run around 2200RPM to 2500RPM.
and the normal RPM on N.O.T (normal operating temperature) is roughly about 700RPM. so your RPM is not a problem.

the speedometer is actually runnig from speedocable thatruns from the transmission case.

my prob.....my RPM won't go lower then 1100RPM on N.O.T! i think i should flush my coolant system.....

Could be water in the speedo line that froze. It most likely melted from
the friction of the spinning cable after a few minutes.
Might be a good idea to spray some moisture remover like WD-40 in there
to get rid of the water and lube up the cable.

Noise !

Hey !
Just got my SR5 and just got on this forum and already I see that my "behind-the-RPM" noise is quite common. So if I get this right, no bother repairing that ?
