4age Ae82

I have just bought an 87 FXGT to put in speedway. It has the Blue top TVIS 4AGE engine. I have discovered that it idles at 2500rpm when cold and takes ages to slow to a regular idle. A friend mentioned something about a couple of sensors on the #4 end of the block. Do these have anything to do with it? If so how do I check them? Any other things I can try? I thought of putting a variable resistor in the line to trick the ECU to see if that works.

Most if not all Toyotas do that. There's probably nothing wrong with it at all

2500 is to high, check to see if its completly full of water.

I wouldn't bother with a resistor as it would mess with your normal running.
If its only a speedway car does it really matter what it idles at??

yes, 2500 when its cold sounds about right.. even my Smallport idles at 2500rpm on the 90 GTS.. then it slowly goes down to about 1000rpm. However up here in Canada, in my area its about -5 to about 5 Celsius right now. The car idles better in the summer though, sometimes it actually goes down to about 600-700rpm and I usually increase the idle a little as sometimes it feels like it will stall. It's just the temp sensor doing its job IMO, but I would still say you could try to lower the idle a little after it has completely warmed up.

Really?? I've never seen a 4age idle higher than 1800 when cold. My silvertop sits just under 1500 when stone cold.

hehe.. usually at -20 to -30C the motor barely cranks, battery sounds like it would be dead and once the motor starts.. OMG you should hear the sounds that come out of the motor. but once it gets warmer then it starts to sound normal.

Thanks

Thanks for the great prompt replies. I will have to wait till I get the car set up properly and give it a good run to see if it may help.
