99 doesnt want to start right away, has to crank for a while

Hi,
I have a 1999 and its been doing this thing lately where it seems to be starving for fuel, when you go to start it it just turns over for like 5 to 10 seconds before it finally fires up, it has new air filter, plugs and wires, anyone have this problem or any suggestions as to what it could be. I also have a 1993 thats bulletproof w/ 300k on it and it has never done this.

fuel pump, fuel filter.. it could be the pump its taking its time to work as its probably on the way out.. or the fuel filter could be clogged. I'm betting my money on the pump though.

Does it crank for 5 to 10 seconds? (Fuel, ignition)

Or does nothing happen and it starts every few tries? (Starter -- look at the starter contacts)

It cranks for the 5 to 10 seconds, as if it had just run out of gas and had to prime, but pretty much every cold start. I will get the fuel filter changed, if that doesnt fix it looks like a new pump.

I would doubt either of those would cause the problem, But a new fuel filter wouldn't hurt.

Cold start injector??

What motor does it have A series or ZZ?

Hi,
I don't think the 99' has a fuel filter you can change, I think it's part of the fuel pump. Atleast that's what the dealer told me.

That's right, the fuel filter is in the tank with the fuel pump and it is not necessary to service it.

Do you only get this delay when it sits for several hours (overnight) or does it also happen if it is running and you stop it and then start it again right away?

Try turning the key on, so you hear the fuel pump running to build up pressure for 5-10 seconds before you crank it over. If it starts right away then you know there is initially not enough fuel pressure at the injectors. It could be that the fuel pump is getting weak and it is slow at building up pressure, or there is check valve or by-pass valve in the system that is not retaining pressure between starts.

It has become standard starting procedure to let the (new last year) fuel pump build up pressure in the system for 5-10 seconds on my wife's Le Sabre before cranking it over because the system loses pressure when it sits overnight.
