Ya I saw your VW on club4ag. Looks really nice

If im not mistaken, you live in california? Rust over there isn't too bad right?

Just go and trust your instincts from being an experienced car owner as to the various sounds coming from the engine at idle, turning, braking etc. You know the drill etc. A "well used" 86 will probably have worn bearings, so listen for sounds from the rear. You should inspect all the rods in the back of the car, check if they are bent. (loss of control in a drift ---> into a curb)

coming from a guy that did a full restoration on that vw, there's nothing impossible..

anything that swings open can be replaced, so who cares. but just double check the body for any rust. check:

- inside the doors where the hinges are
- on top of windshield
- rockers
- front shock towers
- please take note of the driver side inner wheel well, some ae's have rusted a hole there to which you can see the driver side wheel (cause of a leaky clutch master cylinder) this is an example (sorry gord for borrowing your pic): http://jjj.image.pbase.com/u13/voodoopriest/large/3424287.badgts1.jpg

- if you can pull up the carpet, the driver side floor might exhibit rust because of a faulty clutch master cylinder that dripped fluid onto

aside from checking accident history, just double check the frame. as i said before, anything that bolts on or swings open can easily be replaced. good luck bro!
