Engine noise at low acceleration-'91 Corolla

I have a '91 corolla 4AFE that just recently started making an extra whirling-grinding-rattling sound at the end of a low acceleration, almost like something's loose? But it doesn't affect the performance of the car. At freeway speeds or even above 40mph, car sounds normal.

The sound occurs in neutral, park, or drive at the end of an acceleration. I also noticed that white-smelly smoke pumps out of the exhaust pipe (more than ususal) about the same time.

Was reading about car symptoms and it could be my catalytic converter starting to go bad. Any suggestions? diagnosis?

rattling could be the exhaust shield that's lose, they always go lose and make a rattle sound at low rpm or park.

I'll check the exhaust shield. I hope that solves the problem. Also, sorry about posting 3 times...did it by accident IE froze on me. Tried to delete the other 2 but didn't have the option to in Edit mode.
