noisy breaks

Can anyone think why a 92 Corolla Sedan with practically new breaks (~ 6 month) would suddenly develop a break squeal? The squeal seems to come from the right side, probably the front, and is only there when the breaks are moderately applied. Light or heavy breaking does not cause the squeal. CV joint was replaced several weeks ago (the caliper and rotor were off for a bit). I have since had the wheel off to see if there is anything amiss. I found that the rotor was loose, but thought that was ok because they are just press fitted and secured when the wheel is bolted on. There are no squeakers on the pads and the springs are in place. All looked normal.

This bothers my wife more than myself, but I just told her that it was a change in the humidity that affected the resonant frequency of the rotor and thus produced a squeal - there was nothing to be done. Now that she is satisfied, I like to find out what actually is causing the squeal.

All comments appreciated.

Paul.

Repeated heat cycles can cause pads to settle, becoming loose and vibrate, causing the squeeking (which is simply a high-pitch vibration you're hearing). Pushing harder on the brakes prevents the vibration.
This can be fixed by applying anti-squeek material wherever the pad touches the caliper. It comes in a tube and looks like silicon (usually blue). Now's also a good time to put anti-seize compound on the caliper sliders and mounting points.
That's my guess.

Wouldn't it squeal the same day the pads were installed, instead of 6 months later?
I wasn't aware this car used shims.

I replaced the brakes but I did not use anti squeal (didn't know there was such a product). I shall search it out. Thanks for the replies.
