A4FE or A4GE

I'm woking on a 1990 corolla DX
4dr/at/ps/ac/pb.
208,000 miles.

the book says it has an a4GE motor and the local toyota dealership agrees when i give them the vin. (2T1AE94A0LC055846)

From what I've seen so far this is an a4Fe motor. It has dual cams but only one cam works off of the timing belt and the other works off the gears from the first cam.

The a4Ge shows two external cam-gears ... one on each cam with the timing belt going around -both- cam gears.... as oposed to the belt only going around one gear in my case...

Did someone swap out motors at some point?? or am i totally wrong on this?

If your cams are that way and also have a timing belt instead of a timing chain, then you have a 4A-FE head. So you are correct. Various inconclusive messages have appeared on the forum about putting 4A-FE heads on 4A-GE blocks or vice versa. Going from memory, the 4A-GE engine has an oil cooler that would show up as a tube running from the place where the oil filter attaches to the cooler.

4 A FE and 4 A GE dude.

Jeez, I just answered a similar thread like 2 weeks ago, I posted pictures and everything to show how different the motors look from each other, etc...

SEARCH BUTTON HELPS!

This is a 4AGE if your motor doesn't have TWIN CAM 16 VALVE on the upper cam cover, then its a 4AFE.

And this is a 4AF.. the 4AFE is fuel injected instead of carbed, but its still the same basic motor.
