USA Need new engine

Two mechanics tell me I need to replace the 4AFE engine in my daughter's 92 Corolla.

If I use a 5AFE engine, can I switch out the intake manifold, exhaust manifold, etc. from the 4AFE engine?

I checked for another thread on this subject, but could not find one. If there is one, can anyone post a link?

Thanks for your help!

yea thats the problem with toyota's once they start burning oil or acting up big time mechanics will say replace them. One came into the shop blue smoke from under the hood, and out the tail pipe and they told him... new engine time!

It has a tapping noise. They say it is a bearing going bad.

I knew it had the noise when we bought the car, but was hoping we could get by without a complete transplant.

So, I don't think they are overreacting.

tapping could also be a lifter. Did you ever replace a head gasket in the car?

Haven't done anything to the engine.

I took it to a Toyota specialist (not the Stealer, btw!) who's been around for 20 years. He's the second one who recommended I replace the engine. My regular mechanic first gave me the good news!

I say change the oil. When I first got my '89 SR5, the previous owner hadn't remembered the last time he changed the oil !! I put new synthetic in it, let it work through for the next week of driving, and the loud engine noise (which sounded like a lawn mower)gradually went away.
It's has been a perfect engine ever since! I hope your solution was as simple as mine

you may try what SR5_4WD did, it might work.. or if there's still a prob, well maybe its time to replace the engine.

Question

Changed the oil... Still have the loud tapping noise.

Back to the original question. Can the components from the original 4AFE engine be switched over to a 5AFE engine?

You could, but since the 5A appears use the 2nd gen head, the intake mani might not fit. Plus, with a 5A-FE you're losing .1 litres. 4A-FEs are cheap and plentiful, why not get another?

I've installed a 5A-FE in place of the 4A-FE about a year ago on my 92 Corolla DX. I thought there would be some noticeable loss in performance but it actually ran better than expected. The parts I had to use from the 4A-FE to get it to work are the following; Distributor, intake manifold with its support bracket, exhaust manifold, water pump inlet and a new o-ring, air conditioning compressor support bracket and finally I had to use a USD quarter size knockout from an old electrical box with JB Weld to seal the old EGR valve opening on the 5A-FE engine. The car runs great and with today's high gas prices , I barely use my F150 or the Expedition.

Please make sure the new engine has the fuel injectors located in the same fashion as the old engine. If the injectors are connected directly to the head then the replacement engine must be the same or the intake manifold won't work.

I hope this info helps.
Andrew
