The whole point of a winter car is so you can spend your time and money on a nice summer car. Would you rather have an awesome summer car and a POS winter car, or two so-so cars?

two so- so cars? I am not saying mod it or anything. Nice set of winter tires. Rust filled in and some paint...
And actually guido I think in canada it's stupid to have a summer car... like shit normally summer isn;t all that long. I had been planning to fix up the 79 firebird we have until gas shot up last summer. I wasn't going to put it away in the winter, it was going to be an all year car
Besides would you rather not drive a car thats rusting out? and if you take care of it, it will last you longer. Letting the rust progress and never doing anything will eventually have it hit the frame and floors...

freakinbox: I guess we have different ideas of what a winter and summer car is. For me a winter car is a POS that's used to survive the winter. Sure it needs to be safe, but I wouldn't spend a dime on anything extra. It should cost under $1000, drive it into the ground, then get another one. Every $1 spent on fixing rust, etc can be spent on a summer car which you plan to keep for years and years.
For me a summer car is whaver vehicle is driven when there is no snow or salt on the roads. This could be from April to December - 75% of the year. For me that's enough to justify a summer vehicle.

Some people don't have the money or space for 2 vehicles - which is cool. So they get a modest year-round vehicle. But personally I would rather spend $25K on an awesome summer car, and $5k on a crappy winter car, than $30k on a modest year-round vehicle that will rust out in our winters anyway.

If I were you I'd fix up the Firebird and keep it in good condition (no winters). You won't regret it. And you can sell it for more than any Corolla.
