Timing Belt

OK guys time to change it. I have been reading along here and now I am seriously confused. Does my 97 1.6 have a timing belt or no? Is the serpentine belt my timing belt? Please help. Oh and How much should it cost to have done?

Thanks,
matt

the serpentine belt is not the timing belt. IF you open the hood on the car behind the serp. belt you will see a black plastic cover. That is the timing belt cover. when you do the belt you will probably end up doing the serp belt at the same time. There is a cam seal and crank seal behind the cover alsothat can be replaced once the t-belt is off. then if I remember right there is one tensioner pulley. The water pump is not run by the t-belt like it is on a Cmary but you may want to have it replaced also since it is easier to get to with all of the other stuff out of the way.

as for cost jsut to do the t-belt you are probably in the 150-200 dollar range. It is not a very hard job to do. If you end up with worse case scenario you are probably in teh 250-300 dollar range.

I agree it's a pretty straightforward DIY if you have the tools and a clean place to work. You should get a Haynes manual - it will give you step by step and torque specs etc.

Here's a link to show you what you're in for.

It's not that easy, you need a pulley puller to get the alt/aircon belt pulley off, and its very easy to break the edges of it.
