Check Engine Light - P0446

Hi

I had the check engine light come on 3 weeks ago. I tightened the gas cap and wait a few days and finally since the light still stayed on, i took it to the dealer and they ran the diagnostic and got a code P0446 EVAP System Vent Control. They said all the sensors were fine and so they reset the code and the light went away.

Few days went by and my gas was down pretty low so i pumped a full tank of gas and when i started the car, the light came back on. Again i tightened the cap and waited a few days but the light never went away. I had the battery on my car replaced and that reset the code and the light went away, this was on Friday April 14th.

This morning on my way to work the light came back on. Should i take it back to the dealer? I hate to pay the $70 for diagnostic again. I am in canada and no one that i know of will do the test free of charge. HELP!

Here in the States you can buy a code reader for $40.00. Save 50% and be able toread codes "forever".

Anyone have any suggestions regarding this CEL? The VSV was checked and found to be normal according to the toyota technician, i wonder if it is the canister?

I hate this stupid light, its adding a lot of stress.

It could be the canister. When you fill up, do you continue pumping after the automatic shut-off on the pump? This can cause gas to enter the canister, ruining the charcoal.

I hate to admit but i have done that in the past, never will i do that again. Can the canister air out over time without me having to replace it?

No. I'd recommend you find a good mechanic and have him check the canister. If I were you, I'd stay away from the dealership. Around here, many mechanics have the factory service manuals on their computers or belong to associations where they access the manuals on line. They're just as good as the dealer service. The dealers way overcharge in most cases.
