4age timing adjustment

Can anyone tell me if turn the dist. clockwise will advance or retard my timing.. My car is pinging really bad and I don't have a timing gun so I wanted to try to retard it a little till I can get my hands on a timing gun to really adjust it..

Thanks in advance..

As stated, Clockwise to advance. Counter clockwise to retard. We're in the same town and I have a timing gun handy. LMK if you need more help.
