When to change timing belt on 97 1.6L?

Hi. I have a 97 Corolla with the 1.6L and I just hit 100 000 km the other day. I know that alot of cars you have to change the timing belt around that time, but I was told not all cars are like that. So when do I have to change the belt on my car? Thanks!

the recommended change interval is 60,000 miles / 96,000 km's, although the belts are known to last long past that point. For example, the timing belt on my mom's '95 Avalon was still in new condition after 60,000 miles.

You can run it past where you are at now, but it is not recommended, as your engine is what is known as an interference engine. That meanins that there is not enough room for the piston to be all the way up, and have the valves be open at the same time. If the belt breaks while you are driving the 2 can make contact and rouin your engine.

Ask Toyota.. I think for most newer cars the time to change is extended to 140,000km last time I was at Toyota, the newer Camry's had that interval in their books.

The 4A-FE is NOT an interference engine, so in the event of the belt breaking, piston/valve damage is very unlikely. Still I'd replace the belt sooner or later, just because it should be replaced I guess.

I don't know why I didn't just do this right away, but I just called the dealer and it is every 96 000 KM. Time for a new belt I guess... Thanks!
