HELP! AE86 on ebay worth buying??

Hi guys, I'm 16 and am looking for a car just to tinker with and learn to drive on. I think that the corolla will be great because it is pretty slow and reliable(??). I found this one on ebay that is like 30 miles from my house. Its a 1987 corolla that was in an accident. The motor has 161,XXX miles on it and the owner says it runs good. I contacted the owner asking if there was any damage to the frame and am waiting for a response. The Buy It Now is set at $1000.

What I really need to know is how hard will this be to fix and how much do you think it will cost??

Here is the item description:
You are bidding on a 1987 gt-s parts car. The car was completely stock when it was crashed. It has a bluetop 4age with 161523 miles on it. The headgasket was replaced and the head was milled down about 500 miles ago. The engine still runs and revs fine. The transmission is getting old and has some syncronizer problems. All suspention components are undamaged, except the passenger side tierod was bent in the accident. Everything but the front body panels and hood is completely salvagable. The car has a kouki axle with an open differential. This is a perfect gt-s parts car or if you are doing an sr5 to gt-s swap.

Pics:

I dont care about the interior since if I get the car I will probably just gut it anyways. I think this would be a great car for me to just fiddle and get some experience from. I would love your input on if this is a good car for me or not. If I get this car I will defenitely start spending more time on the forums.

The auction is ending in 3 days so any responses are greatly appreciated.

TIA!!!!

-alex

well it sounds good to me. Once u fix it up itll be fine. Once u fix it up all ull have to do is change oils, plugs, few other things. These are great cars and last a very long time. I just moved onto a 2006 corolla LE from a dodge neon and not one day do I thin it was a bad choice. These are rock solid cars and very hard to kill them. But yea once u fix it up itll be a great car to learn on and keep for a while.

If you really want an ae86, get it.

Considering it's been in an accident and it's in that condition interior-wise, $1000 is too much.

1000 is WAY to much! It can be fixed. the damage doesn't look overly bad. They can straighten the frame if it's bent.
it looks like it's bent mostly before the strut tower.

Thanks guys, I was thinking that 1000 is steep also. I think I will go like 500$. How hard is it to change out body panels and stuff anyway?

Thanks for the replies, keep em coming!

it's not the fender, bumper, headlight assembly you have to worry about
it's getting the left side of the car straightened out. you have to make sure the frame isn't bent if it is, have to straighen that too
swapping out fenders, doors, the hood and everything thats wrecked on that car is a little harder than your thinking. They don't always line up nice and then you have to try to line them all up so they look nice, can be a bitch.
then there is the fact you have to find those parts! they aren't just laying around at evey junkyard anymore. the ae86 is getting to old for that, at least in my area
and who knows what the suspension and steering is like under there? maybe it went over something and bent that all up... maybe the oil pan is damaged... and so on

So trust me 500 is a ripoff. Cars that don't run and haven't been in an accident go for 500 - 1000. even if he was just selling it for the motor it's worth maybe 100 unless it's a new motor. 4age being so cheap and all

don't get it... any 20 year old car with a chassis damage is no good. this is a good buy IF you'll use it as a parts car. hence the description "part's car".

save up a little more and get a running GT-S. evenif it has some body rust as long as the underchassis is still good.
