2002 Corolla
I have a 2002 Corolla, 62,608 miles, regular oil changes, new brake pads...I mean I take care of this vehicle. Lately I've been getting some wierd noises and jumps and stutters and whatnot. It all started with this chirping noise when I press on the accelerator during a stop or say I've let go of the gas pedal altogether and I'm just coasting through a parking lot, when I depress it again, there is the chirping noise. I'm suspecting the belts, but I have no idea which one. I'm capable of working on cars, but this modern day advance technology equipped vehicle is nothing like my bare bones 67 Camaro RS...it's much more difficult to assess the problem and then work on it with this car. Anyway...then my car started to stick in gears and hestitate on shifting...I would be redlining in like 2nd gear for a good bit of time before it would shift to third....and it's very annoying especially when I'm trying to get on the highway and I have about 6 other people about to eat my rear bumper for lunch. Also, when I go to do a really...how to say...drastic? stop, or say I'm going 40mph and I didn't know a stop sign was coming up...I'm riding the brakes for a good 45 feet trying to stop in time, no tire screeching, but when I go to accelerate after stopping, my car jumps as if my calipers were stuck in the closed position...or is it something else? I checked the pads when I changed them, there is the correct amount of clearance between the pads and both sides of the front two discs, and there is no sound of scraping or anything when I'm driving around or when I'm using the brakes, just when I do one of those stops and then go to take off again.
Now. I took the car to AutoZone because my check engine light came on yesterday. The code read "Malfunctioning shift solenoid 'E'"...I called Toyota, they said the solenoid is $165.48 before tax and labor to replace the part is $200.00 before tax. Now, I don't have a problem buying the part, maybe if I could get it a little cheaper then I'm all for it, but...$200 to put the new one on? Is this something I could do myself? The technician I spoke to at the service department said it's located on the outside of the transmission, so I'm assuming it would be a fairly simple job, basically jack the car up, take off the old one, unplug it from any wiring, clean the contacts, plug the new one into any wiring, put the new on one....right? Problem is, I can't even find a picture of this thing so I can look under the car to try and see it myself to determine if I should even try it. The tech also said he could fax me some diagrams to give to anyone that I would want to do the work for me...so maybe I should let him fax that and go from there?
So that's my main problem as I don't want to damage any of the gears or anything. I still would love to know how to make my car stop chirping, that would be lovely. And how to make the car stop jumping abruptly after a pretty intense stop. Any thoughts? Thanks in advance.
