2000 Corolla- Burning Oil :(

Okay, I just bought this car 3 weeks ago and didnt really notice the fact that it's burning oil at an uncomfortable rate. Any suggestions on what it may be?

2000 Corolla LE Automatic
97000 miles

I've changed the oil 3 days ago, put 3.9 quarts and a fresh Toyota oil filter in. I also took out the PCV valve and cleaned it out. The PCV valve was a-okay, it rattled like it should.

There are clouds of blue smoke as well as a smell of burning oil under the hood. I've driven 180 miles and the oil level on the dipstick has gone down a quarter of the way between the fill line.

What are the common problems with these engines? Thanksfully it's under warranty for another 10 days, so I'll just hope they'll be able to deal with it.

Headgasket?
Valveseals?

Not neccesarily burning it.. I had a leak in my oil cooler lines one time, everytime I stepped on the gas.. oil would spurt out of the cooler line and onto the manifold, leaving a nice smoke cloud behind me and the same oil smell in the engine compartment. I'd say look for oil leaks, specifically ones that are dropping oil on the manifold OR the exhaust system in general.

There are no leaks evident on the block. The blue smoke is coming out of the exhaust pipe. There are no leaks visible in the engine bay, or on the ground underneath the car. I'm really hoping it's not something that requires taking apart the engine, if that's the case, I dont want the car. I bought a Corolla so I wouldnt have to worry about things like this...

At a guess, oil control rings. That means pulling the engine apart.

It means pulling the engine apart, but at least rings are relatively easy to do.

that little snorkel that runs from behind the headlight and then squeezes under the battery tray, that came out because i dropped a bolt down it. well i never put it back in and it turns out that removing that peice made a large difference in the zoomyness of the car.

If you got warranty demand that they take care of it. Don't let them blow smoke up your *** (pardon the pun)

I had a car once that had a slightly rough idle (relatively low miles) when I test drove it and the salesman said probably from sitting for while, should smooth out. Well it didn't. I had to go back several times but finally they found that I had a cracked ring and bent rod. But I had to keep on them to get it fixed.

Go back and get it fixed!

My guess is rings/scored cylinders. It is very possible for an engine to burn a LOT of oil and not have any obvious signs. If you have blue smoke, the burning rate can be even higher.

Find out if this engine has hardened cylinder walls. If so and you need to bore them, the rebuilt engine may not last as long.

Hey at least you've got a warranty. Dont let them make you run it out past the warranty so you get stuck having to pay for it. Make sure you get it in to them and get it on paper before the deadline.
