I did a A/C conversion to R134a from R12 on my 1989 Corolla SR5. It turned out great, but it was hard because I waited until 'Black Death Occured.

(my A/C compressor disintigrated, bearings literally melted and the wobble shaft literally melted and twisted. (car had about 200,000 when that happened.
I ended up taking all the parts out, except the condensor, which I only flushed out while it was still in the car. I put in a new/rebuilt Compressor with new clutch ($75.00 on eBay), bought new R134a fittings and O-rings for fittings (about $25) and also replaced the receiver/dryer $20.00 , took out the Evaporator and expansion valve for really good cleaning. Put in new oil and it works great.
I thought I would pass this on to those that have A/C problems or are thinking about the R12 to R134a conversion. Note, I am in California so we have the no R12, or very very expensive R12 here (R12 I think is like $50.00 a lb here). R134a can be bought for about $8 a can (see Walmart) less if on sale, but can be as much as $15.00 per lb if purchased at a higher price shop or store.
Note: this A/C work is very hard and not for begginers. You need/are supposed to follw all laws ans have proper equipment. Modern A/C systems require very specific pressures and vacuuming

before refilling.
