timing belt or chain?

My 98' Corolla LE has 103K miles on it... and im thinking it might be a good idea to get the timing belt inspected/replaced. I was woundering if it does in fact have a timing belt... and if I should get it replaced... like whats the average age of the corolla timing belt... and is the 1.8L EFI engine a non-interference engine?

Your '98 has a 1ZZ engine with a timing chain. It would be rare to have to replace it.

Runs with a timing chain. It is an interference engine. But very rarely do they snap...

v8's used to drive for years and year and thousands upon thousands of miles on the same chain. the engine will start running rough before the chain snaps.

yeah, I didnt know if this particular engine ran on a timing belt or chain... I had a hunch it was a chain because of the valve cover design... usualy on a I4 with a timing belt they have an access pannel that can easily be removed for belt inspection purposes... But since mine didnt have that I started woundering if it were a timing chain... IM not so familiar with Toyota engines... I know the Ford Zetec or Duratec inside and out... But put one of these 1.8L's in front of me and I have a harder time then George Bush when he gives a speech. So im trying to slowly learn about the engine... From what I have read/heard this 1.8L is pretty much bullet proof. But I havent heard much about the 4 speed ATX... Are they are pretty good trannie? How often should I have my fluid changed?

Well timing chains can stretch and the pullies I'm sure are under quite a bit of stress, remember if you get the aftermarket pullies get the "loud ones".
