Hi guys, i'm new here and love toyota's and i have a 1990 16 valve sport with a 4af engine. Can someone please tell me what mods i can do to this engine without turboeing. Thanks.
it's not the money you spend. it's if the final result you get is what you wanted. It's not just power. BUt the feel. and you know an N/A engine is a different feel from a turbo'd one.
no point in spending the money in a turbo if it's not what he wants, it won't feel complete

Yes... I know... N/A engine has a different feel... with the turbo you actually get some power, but with the N/A 4A-F/FE you get all the noise and tremble, but you still lack the power.
Its like pringles, once you boost, you cant stop.
he's like me doesn't want a turbo. I don't need all that torque. for the power the 4af puts out it has more torque then the 4age. thats what you sacarfice by moving the cams farther apart and angling the valves more.
so it depends on what your looking for from the engine if you want it N/A
Hp or torque...

Oh lol, thats really the biggest pile of turd I've seen roll out of someones mouth. a 4A-F has more torque than a 4A-GE?
4A-GE torque 149NM
4A-F torque 128NM
But seriously, its pretty much where you put the baseline, a 128NM torque reading will feel poor compared to one that has 350NM torque.
Moving the cams apart and angling the valves has little to do with the torque, it helps the engine flow better. Do yourself a favor and take a ride in a high performance turbo car, I seriously doubt you'd want to go back to an NA car after a 60-200km/h pass that leaves you almost shitting in your pants.
ugh read it carefully flashmn
for what the 4af puts out, if the 4age put the same hp out the 4af would have mor torque and yes moving the cams farther apart sacrafices torque but for the power gains it's worth it
kind of like a super charger. takes power but for what it adds it's not a big deal
so what I was saying is if you take a 4af and tune it well the torque that comes out of it will be more than if it was a 4age at the same hp.
I don't want a turbo I don't care if I drive one that has it or not. I didn't like a low powered turbo diesel.. just didn't feel right. over an N/a thats just how I am.
Only reason I thought of using the turbo I have laying around is because I am selling the car it's in :p but I didn't try that so w/e
and as long as I was driving I wouldn't be shitting my pants, I don't trust other people enough to get in the car with them if they are going to do that :p
according to a site I looked up
4age bigport puts out 112bhp and 97 ft/lbs torque
4age small port puts out 130bhp and 105 ft/lbs torque
4af puts out 90bhp and 95 ft/lbs
4afe puts out 103bhp and 102 ft/lbs
I didn't like a low powered turbo diesel.. just didn't feel right. over an N/a thats just how I am.
And you're basing not wanting a turbo from a turbodiesel?
Really though, take a ride in a 400+hp nissan 200SX, you're not gonna like NA after that.
but really saying that the 4A-F would have more torque over a 4A-GE if the power was the same is just rediculous, since the power ISNT the same and it never will be.
depends how much money you want to put into it. All I am saying is the cams being closer give you more torque, but less power. the other thing that limits the 4af's power would be the valve terrain. 91 hp at 6300 rpm, your redline! lol
Hi guys thanks 4 the tips. And no i don't wanna go turbo, just keeping it normally aspirated. I've heard of putting in a 38mm 4 into 1 branch manifold and getting better induction. What are your views. Thanks.
