Check Engine Light, resetting

Ok, let me preface this post by saying that part of the problem is that I'm cheap. regardless, help would be useful. Here's the story.

Its snowwed terribly here this weekend. in the process of getting my car out, I spun the wheels a bit, and the check engine light came on. I took it into the dealer, they told me the code was "excessive speed" (or something similar) and that they checked the sensor and everything was a.o.k., but here comes the rub...they need to hook the computer up to my 99 corrolla to clear the code, and that's going to cost me $75. just on principle I don't want to pay them $75 bucks to clear the code (and oh yeah, its not covered by my warrenty)...I understand it involves work and time and they're heavbily invested in the diagonistic equiptment to reset the code, but regardless I feel like toyota is squeezing $75 out of me unnecessarially (they aren't in fact fixingf anything). and I do want the CEL to be there in the future if soemthing goes afould.

Anyway, what I was wondering is there anyway I can reset the light. can I leave the battery unhooked for a certain amount of time? is there somewhere I can stick a paperclip, will my neighboorhood mechanic have a coputer that could reset the code for less than the $75 our friends at Toyota want?

Help. Please!

Thanks

I had the same problem, but I have a 1990. My uncle unhooked my battery for 10 secs and the light went away. You could try that. Good luck.

thanks for the info re: battery. turns out that actually does work...wanna know how I know this. well when I went to pick up my car from our friends at my local Toyota Dealer this morning, I arrived to a stone-cold dead battery. idiots. well anyway, my CEL was not on when I pulled away this morning, so all in all I'm a pretty happy camper!

Ive had my 93 corolla for 10 yrs and that light never came on until a week ago.Tried resetting it the battery way and it worked for a few mins but came back.Took it in for diagnostics and it turned out I had a cracked exhaust manifold and a blown oxegen sensor.
