Exclamation SHIT: 25 miles per gallon!

So I measured my gas mileage for the first time in a long time, and I got just short of 25 mpg... something like 24.9.

What the hell is going on? The car has had regular service at the dealership, in fact it just had 90k mile service a half a year ago (air filter's clean, new spark plugs pretty sure). The car seems to run fine, sounds nice, no fuel smell or anything from the exhaust so I doubt it's running rich.

I drive around usually not revving higher than 3k (one exception being going up the highway which is a steep hill where I keep it in third at 3.5-4k for a few min), don't rev my engine pointlessly, and don't idle for too long or drive in heavy traffic.

Now it is pretty hilly terrain here in Ithaca, but I still don't think I should be getting this low mpg (don't remember what I measured before, but EPA estimate even with auto tranny is 27).

Right now I'm trying to do complete grandma driving, not revving past like 2200 (even though my tq peak is at 2800 and it feels quite shitty staying below it), and seeing what mpg I get.

What kind of mileage do you guys get especially with 93-97s get with the 1.8L?

now that they have added ethanol into the gas mixtures, you guys should be seeing your MPG go down a little..

How much do the size and pressure of tires affect MPG? I've heard that small, thin tires (the kind nobody likes) get the best gas mileage.

ofcourse rolling resistance does down. However, really though, I wouldnt bother complaining with 25mph, hilly terrain takes alot of toll on mileage.

Mines older, and I get a lot worse.I just dont bother about it, because the car will eat everything I put in the tank anyways.

You live in a relatively traffic jam free zone. One word my friend, be a man and drive a manual!

Thanks man, this has solved all my problems!

Maybe you would consider the fact that I'm a highschool student who got this car for free from his parents and has no money to get a new one or swap a transmission.

I think you already know the answer. Drive within the torque peak. Laboring the engine decreases your MPG.

As above and also..
a. tire presure between 29-36 psi..
b.CHeck that the car is well seviced such as the air cleaner..and plugs

a dirty air cleaner will effect the consumption a fair bit....
Not sure about this one but what if the o2 sensor is faulty..?

Ok I know this is probably a stupid quesiton but what is the torque peak???? Is it the RPM that gives you the most torque???? And if so what is it for the rollas?

Daniel, yes that's it. Check your car's specs, usually it indicates the max torque at a certain engine speed. Don't know if it varies from year to year (most have similar powerbands anyway).
