1983 corolla overheating problem...

ok a friend of mine owns a 1983 corolla and its his normal winter car but its been having to be used now (summer) because of other car troubles. the valve near the heater (inside engine compartment) has leaked when it gets hot but it never has been a problem until now. today the car would be fine (half way up the guage) then it would rocket up to the red and would sit there. we pulled over and checked the engine and indeed it was overheating, so we turned the car to acc to run the fan and heater (disapate heat) and right after turning on the heater the rad cap released pressure for about 5-10 seconds and sealed back up. so we left the car for a bit to let it cool down (1/3 on the guage) and drove for a bit with it slowly creeping up on the red, we pulled over again and let it sit. ended up my friend had to get home so he left and it was in the red again when he got home.

the upper rad hose will empty right out after the car is turned off, the resevoir is 3/4 full, the fan come on and turns off properly, the rad isnt bent, or clogged.

Just because the upper hose heats up doesn't mean its not the thermostat, change it anyways and see where that takes you, thermostats are cheap. Also check the waterpump to see if its starting to go, another thing that could be causing the motor to overheat could be the head gasket.
