AE92 AE92 Speedometer/Odometer Not Working

A couple days ago my 1991 AE92's Speedometer/Odometer stopped working. I was wondering what the best method would be for diagnosing what the problem is, and what the most likely problems might be.

I noticed in the check engine error codes list that code 42 is for "No SPD Signal". However I am NOT getting a check engine light. Is this is a clue?

Any advice on the best way to tackle this would be very much appreciated.

Thank you.

Change the speedo cable dude, its the first thing that goes on the AE92s.

Ever get the *Weee weee weeeee weeee!!!!* sound from the speedo when its about -10 to -30 C??? that's the speedo cable after freezing.

Thanks REN69,

I'm in Vancouver so I have not actually had the car in -10 to -30. It never gets that cold here! hahaha

I have never had to take the dash out, got any tips? - I hear it's a pain...

Also, what's your take on new speedo cable versus one from the wreckers?

Not sure how much it would be new, but I would rather go that way as one from the wreckers could also be on its way out.

particularly since it's a common problem in our cars.

Cool

my speedo cabel was a 2 piece and only available fromt he dealer. it was about $35.00 for th part. I think it was the bottom half that broke a few years back. it was easy to replace the bottom half.

if you pay that for a speedo setup, your gettin raped. 35 bucks no more.
my Tracker 4x4's speedo cable went on it, so I crawled underneath and fiddled with it near the transfer case and now it works great!

So I'm wondering, is there a cheap place to get one of these speedo cables? Also, are there diagrams I can take a look at because I've never taken apart the dash.
