Project: 1987 Corolla Swap

Well I bought a 1987 Corolla 4-door yesterday, as a project car. I'm not really sure what the technical name is for it, I guess it would be a AE92, but I'm a newb to this. Anyways I'm hoping to swap in a 4agze or a 20V this summer, but I have some questions. How difficult of a swap would either of those be? Would any of them use stock engine mount locations? Many modifications to make them fit, etc? Also the car I bought is a auto, so would swapping for either of these engines mated with a 5-speed be much more difficult? Or any other advice on the engines or anything is really appreciated.

Thanks for your time and patience.

84-87 FWD is an AE82s, 88-92 are AE92s, the swaps are not hard, the motors drop in on the same mounts as the 4AC you have, what will be a pain is the wiring of the motor really, but even then it won't be overly hard. Just gotta get the right wires together or you'll end up creating more work for yourself. Also with your AE82 you will have to upgrade your fuel system as the 4AGE and GZEs are hungrier than a 4AC would be. Other than that, as long as you got the motor, harness, ecu, afm, transmission, axles, etc. you should be ok. Sounds like you would be converting from auto to 5spd.. you will also need the pedals, clutch master cylinder, now you're getting into drilling and adding more stuff to the car, not worth it IMO, just buy a 5spd car and swap that OR go with an Auto 20V.

Do a search dude, there's lots of swaps that have been done to AE92s which basically are the same engine bays as the AE82s.

Thanks for the help, would I need new axles to complete the swap, or would the stock ones work? What kind of fuel system upgrades would you recommend? Will any body parts, (bumpers, etc.) from a AE92 or a AE86 fit on my AE82?

I'm not sure the axles would fit.. I think you would have better luck if you used AE92 axles instead as they do fit the 20V motors.

As for body parts, NO neither AE92 or 86 parts will fit, there's lots of support for the AE82 in Australia/New Zealand though.. LOTS.

Here's the AE82 pic gallery at 4age.net just to give you an idea.

I was starting to think I was boned as far as aftermarket kits go. Just one last quick question. As far as suspension, would a TRD suspension kit or something similar for a AE92 be compatible for my 82, or is it the same case as the bodies?

Thanks for the info
