Misfiring engine

Hello to all, this is my story. My daughter has a 99 corolla that has had a misfire not so much idling as when it is put into gear. The engine light came on and she took the car to Autozone to get the codes read. The guy there said the car was showing a misfire he told her it probably was the distributor cap or rotor (Her car has neither). I have since changed the plugs, wires, checked for voltage at both coils with the key on. Both has voltage and a good ground also. I also grounded the spark plug wire while turning the engine over and all gave what seemed to be good spark. I also gave the car a compression test and all cylinders built up to around 210 in 4 strokes. I had her run the car at about 1/4 throttle (the cars doesn't misfire this way) while I took each wire off the plug one at a time. On the number 1 cylinder it made no change in the rpms. When taking off the others the engine stumbled worse. Is there something here that I am overlooking? Just wondering if anyone had any thoughts.

Thanks in advance,

Jason

One would assume that fuel pressure wouldn't cause a random misfire so that is probably ok, but hat still leaves the injectors for you to check.

a rebuilt ditributor may fix the problen. ywhen he said distributor, he meant the whole thing. You can get a rebuilt for maybe less than $100.

Hello again and thanks for the help. Just to clarify, the misfire was probably bad wording on my part as it is more like a bad cylinder. The car is firing on 3 only. I have good spark on every wire going into the plugs and if all are hooked up and I pull one wire at a time off the plugs all make the engine stumble worse except the cylinder #1, no change. I also pulled each wire one at a time off the injectors and had the same result, stumbling worse with 2,3 and 4 pulled and no change with cylinder #1. Am I to assume since it is getting good spark to all cylinders that I have a dead injector at cylinder #1? I have checked the connector for power and there is power. Anyway to test the injector? I tried to listen but the car now has an exhaust leak and I cannot hear anything. I also tried to spray starting fluid into the breather but couldn't tell if changed or not. Other than a bad injector would a bad lifter cause this? I did have good compression at all cylinders. Thank you for responding to my question.

check the plug wires for too much resistance.

Thank you for the response Flashmn. These are new wires and plugs and all have good spark going to the plugs.

If you suspect injectors, try swapping cylinder #1 with a different cylinder and see if you get different results. I had the injectors out of my 98 and it isn't that much work. Make sure to buy new o rings when you reinstall.

I know you mentioned you checked voltage off the coils, but if you want to be extra sure you can swap the 1-4 coil pack with the 2-3 coil pack and see if it makes a difference.

Just some easy things to check before you really have to tear into it.

Hello again, this is where I am at. I have checked the coils by swapping them and no change meaning number 1 cylinder is still dead. I have pulled out the injectors in the hope of swapping #1 with another and I can't get the injector off the fuel rail. Does anyone know how to remove this injector? It is a 99 corolla, do you just pull on it? Thanks again.

Hello again. I have determined that fuel injector #1 is the problem after swapping it with the next cylinder. I now have no change in the 2nd when pulling the wire from the injector. When number 1 is pulled the engine stumbles worse, just the opposite before swapping the injectors. So it looks like I am off to get an injector. I am not sure if these can be cleaned. The injector passed the ohms test and still failed leading me to think it may be just clogged?

Thanks for all the help,
Jason

I had a similar problem with my 99 corolla. The code was P0304 which meant cyclinder 3 misfire. I checked out everything (wire, wire resistance, plugs etc). It was caused by clogged fuel injector. Maybe your problem is the same.

I was able to find an injector for $98 online. Hope this helps.

They can be cleaned... if one of them has an issue, it may be wise to have them all serviced.

Remanufactured injectors are on the web at $40-50 dollars. Once the car is fixed throw a can of injector cleaner into the gas tank.

Toyota has a service bulletin on cleaning injectors using chevron Techron.

Hello all. Just an update reguarding my situation. I replaced the bad injector with a remanf. one from Autozone for $51.00. The car now runs good but, the engine light did come on again later on. I did remove the EFI fuse for about 20 seconds after making the repair but it still came on. Maybe I have to remove it for a longer period of time? Or it has to be turned off with a scan tool? When the light came back on there were no changes in the engine performance. I appreciate everyones imput in helping me.
