'05 Headlights no longer auto-off

Hi,

I have a 2005 Corolla S. Before two weeks ago, I would get up in the morning when it was still a bit dark and the main head-lights would automatically turn on (I didn't use the switch to turn the lights on). When it got a bit brighter out as I drove, the head-lights would automatically go off. About two weeks ago that stopped. When I start the engine, even though I don't have the light switch on, the head-lights come on and stay on until I stop the engine. It's almost like the sensor that detects if it's light out or not no longer works, or has mud on it?

Any suggestions?

Thank you!

The sensor's in the dash.

Does the green "headlights on" light stay on your dash during this whole time?

do you have the sensor covered up as stated before???? It is located by the drivers A pillar looks like a black tranlucent bubble..... make sure nothing is obstructing that sesor, and if that is not that case, the sensor went bad and the computer went to default setting, which is full light on all the time,

Hi folks,

thank you for taking the time to answer my question. To the first poster, the green "headlights on" indicator is not lite up in the dash board.

To the second poster, do you happen to have (or know where I can get) a better description of the sensors location? sorry, I'm not sure what you mean by the drivers' A pillar. From your description, however, it sounds like the sensor is inside the cab of the car? I will take a peek tonight and see if I notice anything matching your description.

Again, thank you!

If you are sitting in the drivers seat, the daylight sensor is located in the left corner of the dash right at the windshield. It is a little black bubble thing about the size of a nickle. If that is covered up with anything then it will stay on. Also 03-up Corolla's are equipped with daytime running lights that stay on all the time. When they are on the little green light bulb won't light up in the instrument cluster. Its a safety feature to increase visibility of your vehicle to other drivers.

Folks,

I located the sensor near the A frame. It wasn't covered up with anything. I went ahead and cleaned the black bubble just in case something had gotten on it. Unfortunetly, no luck. The main headlights won't auto-off when it's daylight out. Based upon your comments, it sounds like my sensor may be dead.

Do any of you know where I could get info on replacing the sensor?

Again, thanks for all the help.
