I don't think you can just by-pass the ignitor, but you might be able to change over to a conventional ignition system. Read the links below to understand how an ignition system works.

The problem if you change over is the points will now have a much higher current flow through them and will arc (burn). You would need to add a capacitor, attached to the points to reduce this arcing. The distributor may not be set up for this.

If your distributor can not be adapted, you might be able to replace it with an older distributor that is set up for what you need.

Why do you want to by-pass the ignitor?

I Am Using This Engine For Race Purposes And I Think That The Ignitor Assembly Keeps Breaking Down And Therefore Losing Rpm's. I Could Replace Points Alot Easier. Napa Has A Points Dist But They Don't Know If It Is Like Mine Or Different. Considering The Cost Of A Ignitor Box I Would Rather Replace Points More Than It. Can You Send Me A Wiring Diagram If This Is Possible? I Do Not Have A Resistor Hooked Up On The Box Now. Is This My Problem? If So Where Do I Hook It And How? Yep I Need Help

Isn't points kind of detrimental to power?? How about an electronic distributor setup off a slightly newer engine? I know from experience that the guts from a 22R distributor will fit right into the 3TC distributor (and save a $300 upgrade from the dealer), and maybe the 3's dist will fit the 2TC.
Maybe the swap experts here can help.

I just figured the points thing was easy, and I would not have to worry about the box going bad. I have put a new electronic (78) dist on the engine and it would not allow it to time out right. It just would not run when it got hot. I will look into the 22r thing. Do the internal parts just bolt in or are there some mods necessary.

I was also wondering are there any other years or models of auto trannys that would hook up to this engine?
