Really, there is no big difference between the 3 geneations of GZE engines, but i thought it had something to do with the number of Ribs, the absence or presence of a Knock sensor and/or the colour of the lettering.
I could be wrong though...

^^ Thats it! I knew there was a noticible difference between 1st and 2nd gen GZE's. I just couldn't remember what it was. Doesnt make too much difference to HP tho, if thats what youre worried about...

I guess not if you don't think 25hp is not a BIG difference.
The earlier GZEs were rated at 145hp while the last version for the AE101 was rated at 170hp. I can't remember if the Kouki AE92 version was rated at 165hp or 170hp.
check the s/c pulley for a * or a x pattern on the front of it
also, if it has a yellow dipstick it's from an ae92, if it has a grey dipstick it's from an ae101
if it has a top mount (that's still mounted there) then it's from a FWD car (ie japanese corolla)...
if it has coilpacks then it's from a FWD car, if it has a distributor then it's from an mr2 (that is, if whoever put it in used the electronics the motor came with)
if there is an oil return line on the back of the head by the #4 (intake side) piston side then you have a later gen smallport 4agze.
there are noticeable power differences...... theere were different CR ratios and boost levels between different gze's
