'03 Corolla - fuel economy

Hi everyone,

I'm new here. Finally, I found a place for Corollas.
I have a 2003 Corolla CE with A/C and auto tranny and 6200 happy kms on it.

The only puzzling part is the fuel economy. I know it's winter (a really cold one), but here's what I got:
The best one I got so far (since November) was 8.6L/100km. This was with 2/3 highway driving. The worst was 11.6L/100km and I'm averaging around 10.1L/100km.
Is this normal? I'm guessing it's a combination of a new car being broken in and cold weather.

Thanks.

Cold weather.

We get similar numbers with our 2000 ECHO (automatic)

Tires roll slower, wheel bearings have more resistance, more resistance in all of the oils until they get warm, plus the fact that near 1/8 of the driving time ends up being idling time warming the thing up.

Remember advertised numbers are in perfect conditions and probably are done with overinflated tires to boot.

Drive it on the highway this spring you'll think your gauge is broken.
