AE92 How to work on EGR valve?

My '90 Corolla has California emissions and has started to show the trouble code for "EGR Temp too low". The service manual shows many interesting tests one may do on the EGR system. But I don't understand how to get to the EGR valve to work on it. It is on the underside of the intake manifold. I don't have to pass an emissions test, so I rule out taking the engine out of the car to do this. Perhaps I should remove the hood and lie on the windshield, but then I might slide head first into the engine compartment. Anyone know how to work on this thing?

If you have to go through all the trouble of doing all these things, why don't you just take it to a shop and let them deal with it.

I like the people "at the shop" (Las Cruces, Toyota) but why let them have all the fun? I don't particularly like to drive cars, but it is very interesting to try to fix them.

Its just the fact that you make it sound like its so hard of a job to do yet you're still going to attempt to do it that says.. I bet the shop knows how to do it better. Funny thing is they probably do know how to do it better.. OR they take out the motor like you stated.

freakinbox,
On my 4A-FE, it isn't on top of the engine. It is toward the firewal but its on the bottom side of the intake manifold toward the firewall.

REN69,
At least we've established that there are at two forum members who don't how to work on the EGR valve.
