Question Spark Questions for those MegaSquirt users!!

For those of you using a MegaSquirt for spark on a 4AGE and using the Ford EDIS, how did you go about welding your timing wheel to your harmonic balancer so it was on there straight?? Also how did you know where to position the wheel so it would be timed right? Did you bring #1 to TDC and find a location off to the side to mount the sensor so it was lined up with the gap in the wheel when #1 was at TDC?

I have been reading up on the whole MS topic from places that make it easy to understand. But there is no where to ask questions and I have learned a lot so far and might just give it a shot if I can completely understand everything. I just wanted some clarification on those who use the MS for Spark. I have a Red Top I want to experiment with.

Thanks

It doesnt have to be straight, just aslong as the triggering point is 60BTDC. I'm using my ignition box tach signal for the MS, which are both triggered off a 1GT101DC hall sensor and two studs on the crank belt pulley.

um... for a 4 cylinder it should be 90* BTDC..... 60* BTDC should be for a v6.... (ie, 360/4=90*..... 360/6=60)

the sensor doesn't need to be pefectly straight.... however as shown in the picture above rev's will cut out much lower than the value you set in MSS.... if the sensor isn't close enough, then the magnetic polarity of 'on' and 'off' becomes blurred and EDIS gets confused.... i had this problem (with it as shown in the picture below) and it cut at 5500rpm's.... i got the sensor anogher 2-3mm closer and now it cuts at my set 7500 (it's a gze... wanna be nice to it)

DO THE SENSOR FIRST... and then get the motor to TDC, and find where the wheel needs to be located on the pulley in relation to the sensor that is already mounted..... mounting the trigger wheel and then trying to mount the sensor in the correct spot might be a huge pain in the ass

i wasn't using a/c or the p/s units from the ae101 gze, just the alt, so i had something to mount a bracket to (for the VR sensor). for the bracket i just used 2" wide by 1/4" thick aluminum stock and bent it somewhat into a U-shape.... that way i could bolt the VR sensor to it and bolt the bracket to the A/C gze bracket.

and yes, with it THAT close the engine cut at 5500.... i've seen them mounted roughly 1-2mm away from the sensor and clear perfectly!

Umm wrong...it doesnt go like that... its not a division thing to begin with. Its what the box uses as a refrence. MS uses about 60deg BTDC for its refrence, from which it calculates the proper time for injection / ignition. I'm running my MS tach signal through my ignition controller, which also uses 60Deg BTDC as refrence.
Rover uses if I remember 120deg btdc for its refrence, so its not a compution of cylinder amount and 360deg.

"4) Connect DB37 pin 24 (TACH) to PIP on the EDIS module

Step C. Trigger disc and VR sensor

Assuming you have obtained a suitable 36-1 wheel by reference to the Finding EDIS page, you need to establish the correct relationship between the VR sensor and disc.
There are two methods to visualise the relationship with the same outcome.
SPECIFIC-ANGLE is defined as follows: EDIS4=90, EDIS6=60, EDIS8=50"

Hmmh interesting, well mine doesnt use Ford EDIS triggering, my MS is triggered through my ignition box tach signal, and my ignition box uses a 60deg BTDC refrence.

OK, This is interesting. I too will only be using the Alt. and no A/C or P/S. I will first make a location and then line up the wheel.

Anyone have any recommended simple to understand websites to read about MS or MJLJ for those that are not an electrical genius?

I just want to understand the spark area of MS or MJLJ because as for fuel, I will be going mechanical.

Thanks
