1zzfe motor consumes oil? What?

I was doing a little regular maitence on the corolla today, I have been super busy lately so I have had no time to check all of the fluid levels and such. So I finally got around to it, I discovered that I needed to change my oil (according to the records) So I decided to check the dipstick. I pull it out and see the oil level is RIGHT at that bottom line... Ok, what the hell. My brother and I performed an oil change on it Approx. 3200miles ago using Castrol Synthetic Blend 5W-30. we filled it with about 3.5 quarts of the oil and the dipstick read nearly full. So it was good to go. I check it today and it said the oil level was down at the bottom reading... k? I checked under the car, no signs of oil leaking (god I hope not, a 98 corolla with 105K miles better not be leaking oil). I checked the exhaust and revved up the engine and got no scent or sign whatsoever of oil being profusely burned off... So I was reading up the owners manual... I found a section that said this particular engine actually consumes a little bit of oil, in some cases almost an entirely insignificant amount, but can be known to "combust" it as opposed to just use it to lubricate... is this true? should I be worried that my oil level dropped that much only after 3000 some odd miles?

I have heard of some older 1ZZ's consuming oil so as long as you aren't burning oil and have no smells I wouldn't be too concerned. Just out of curiousity, my '05 1ZZ takes 4 quarts of oil and it has 4 quarts when I change/check it, but does the 98 1ZZ's use 3.5? Maybe it needs a little from the beginning...

the bad ones will consume a quart every 600 - 700 mi, yours being a early one (98) it may be developing a problem.... the problem is almost always piston rings and usually there not worn there stuck in there grooves

Did you just recently switch to semi-synthetic? if so that can be causing the problem, your cleaning the crud out that keeps it from burning.....

also sythetic is thinner so it may be slipping through easier, try regular motor oil again.

my brother has owned the car for the last 70K miles. then I bought it from him at 102K he has used a syn-blend since he bought the car... Im going to try an oil change shortly, I just bought syn-blend oil, I read the manual, it says the motor takes 4 quarts. So ill watch it from there, if this persists then I will try a full dyno oil... What do you guys suggest? Maybe a valvoline high mileage?

Before starting to play around with thicker oils that can pose a risk to engine longevity, why not try to find the actual cause of the problem, such as a leaking seal or swapping the piston rings. Hows the blowby?

cause swapping piston rings is easy and all.... Blowby? I guess im not to familiar with this term... The engine runs awesome, very quiet and smooth. and its been very well taken care of all of its life... I guess I dont understand it, I dont see any puddles of oil anywhere under the car, I even check as I drive away from parking spaces, or before I leave my house, nothing, nowhere. im going to change it today, so ill look more into it when I change the oil today.

blowby = exhaust gasses are going past pistonrings, to a degree its ok, but when its excessive, you're gonna have alot of oil shoot out into the intake and be burned.

Well, I just put a Short ram air intake on it, and when I swapped it all out, everything on the air intake looked very clean, I didnt even bother using throttle body cleaner because the plate had nothing on it... Unless you mean something else...

PCV works after the throttle plate, not before it, theres no vacuum before the TB.

ok... How about a wheel bearing?

ok, so I have changed the oil today, and drove about 200 miles, some of which was hard driving. Oil level remains full. Filled with 4 quarts of Castrol Syntec-blend and a Bosch filter. im going to watch it and see what happens...

Though I do have another question, and I would rather not start a new thread.... How hard is it to do a wheel bearing... Taking Michigan rust factor into acount, how long would it take a newbie to replace a wheel bearing and what tools would I need?
