probly a dumb question but...

what engine would be in a 90-91 corolla. i saw it in the junkyard the other day. couldn't read the tag on it.

main reason im asking is cuz my old man has an 89 camry auto, and i have a 3sgte sitting in my garage. im wondering if the tranny on the corolla fwd 5spd tranny might fit. couldn't find my answer in the stickies. if the tranny wont fit then itll have to go AWD and maybe i can use the shifter and cable from the corolla at least. i know theres AWD camry's and corolla's so it wouldn't be all that much work

anyway, i just need to know what engine's could be in it, im still trying to talk the old man into doing the swap, he's looking at getting a truck soon anyway, or are those corollas 4age only?

umm... depends what the car was, SR5 coupes and sedans had the 4AFE, GTS coupes have the 4AGE.

No the Corolla transmission won't fit the 3SGTE, you need either 5spd transmission from a 5SFE Camry or Celica, or the 5spd from a 3SGE powered Celica.

I believe the one from a 5spd Solara will also fit, but don't quote me on it. Your best bet is the ones I gave you up top. If you're planning to run this transmission with the 3SGTE, I would suggest upgrading to a Heavy Duty clutch as you will fry the OEM clutch with the 3SGTE.

ya, i've been looking around. i did find the transmission wont fit. my old man wont do the swap anyway, think its a waste of time.

what i did find though, like you said, is those corollas have 4a block's, so im gonna see about getting my hand on the junker anyway so i can get my mr2 going, needs a new bottom end, threw a rod

Any transmission that bolts up to a 3SFE, 5SFE, 3SGE, 3SGTE, 1MZFE, and possibly the 3MZFE bell housing will swap between the engines as far as bolting to the bell housing.
However, the crank bolt holes [for the drive plate/flywheel] aren't all the same spacing.
And you will have issues in some cars [the MR2 trans will work in the Celica or Camry, but need shifter mods].

Also, the trans wont' all be able to handle the same power.

And while they did make a Alltrac Camry, it would be a real PITA to convert a fwd Camry to awd...
The floorpan is different.
