Hi, I just bought a 2003 Corolla S with 49,000 miles on it. Still under factory warranty. I have noticed that when in drive, just as you accelerate the engine has this rattling noise. It only happens when you just barely begin to accelerate, then it stops completely as if the engine was idling at some frequency that was causing it. It won't do it in Park or Neutral.. only in drive or reverse, and only for a split second. I can hold the accelerator down just barely, with the parking brake on and the car in drive, and the noise will do it constant.. but if I push the accelerator a little further it will quit and the engine sounds fine. What is this?
shortly after i posted this the engine began chirping constantly at idle fromt he same region of the car as the original noise. the chirping would speed up when you accelerate. my mechanic and i diagnosed it as an alternator issue. i replaced it with a new alternator from autozone (bad idea). that alternator had a horrible horrible squeal. so i returned that and put the original alternator back in. now it has the original chirping sound so it must be an alternator issue. tomorrow i'm getting the original alternator rebuilt. i'll let you guys know if it fixes the problem.

I have the same car with 55,000 on it and at cold start-up I hear the same rattle for a moment sometimes and as I accelerate it stops...It also stops doing that once the car gets warmed up..Sounds like its coming from the tranny area and not up near the alternator it has never gotten worse so I just lived with it over the last 4 years...Good Luck...

Could be as simple as a loose heat shield - check all heat shield mountings/bolts.
Well guys the sound turned from that short rattle on acceleration to a constant chirping-like noise that goes at all times. When you accelerate it simply speeds up. When I throw belt dressingon there it stops for about half a mile then starts again. I had the alternator rebuilt and it had a couple bad bearings. The guy who rebuilt it fixed that up for me, then when I put it back on the car I had the same chirping noise. Mechanic doesn't have any idea what it is on the car that's doing it. He checked out the water pump and the tensioner also. I'm going to go get it today and take it to toyota whenever I can this week. This is REALLY frustrating. I've only had the car for 3 weeks and I haven't driven it for over a week.
They have this stephascope type looking thing some mechanics use that will tell where the sound is coming from, better then hit and miss replacing parts to find out......Good luck and keep us informed

would a bad belt cause this noise? it's like a clicking noise. the problem is i know very little about cars or repairing them.. my knowledge doesn't go far beyond basic maintenance, so i basically have to find a mechanic who will be able to accurately diagnose the problem. i htae to take it back to toyota. afraid they'll stick it to me when it seems to just be a minor issue.
Have you checked your belt tensioner? They go out all the time. The belt won't click, it will squeal. The tensioner could click. You can use a screwdriver as a stethoscope-- put the blade on the part you think is making the noise, and your ear by the handle.
I don't think sticking a screwdriver on a moving tensioner pulley is a good idea hahaha... the 'clicking' problem clears up everytime i put WD-40 or belt dressing onto the belt as it's idling.. i'll squirt it briefly onto the belt every few seconds as it winds around the tensioner and it goes away for about 3 or 4 hours until the lubrication dries or evaporates, then i do the same thing and it goes away. this noise didn't start occurring until i put the belt dressing on there (i was trying to address a DIFFERENT noise when i did that). a mechanic friend told me that 9 times out of 10 when you put dressing on a belt and the noise changes or a new noise begins, the belt is the problem. the clicking isn't like a metallic clicking, it does seem to be coming from the belt. tomorrow i'm going to put on another serpentine belt and see if it fixes it.. if not i'll replace the tensioner.. do i need to just replace the tensioner pulley or the entire assembly?
i still have the original vibration in the motor whenever i barely accelerate.. it only happens at a certain RPM and doesn't always occur. it could be the heat shield, i haven't checked that out yet. it's almost not worth addressing. it doesn't sound like a bad noise it's just annoying sometimes.
I don't think sticking a screwdriver OR a stethoscope on any moving part is too good an idea. Was just giving you a cheaper option than a stethoscope to find noises. In a grammar exam I guess I'd have made that a separate paragraph, LOL.
So the new fan belt got rid of the clicking noise, and oddly enough, I think it MAY have gotten rid of the rattle that I got when barely accelerating. That rattle sounded like it was coming from one of the lower pulley's and I Just wonder if that bad fan belt wasn't riding the pulley in an awkward way that was making it rattle at certain RPM/motor frequency vibration.
