'00 Corolla Starting Issue

Hi everyone,
My girlfriend owns an '00 Corolla (auto tranny) with about 80,000 miles. About 90% of the time, when it is started, the engine either stalls after a second or two or it lacks any sort of power. When the latter happens, there is basically no response when you press the gas pedal; in fact, the engine begins to die when you do this. This goes away on the second or third start as well as after 15 seconds of driving.
I thought it could be the fuel pump, but I've tried cycling the engine before starting it and that doesn't seem to solve anything. Does anyone have any suggestions?
Thanks for the help.

You need an OBDII code reader.
