Actually the 3TC engine is quite a smooth running engine like any other engine if kept well tuned and maintained. The Red line on the 3TC is 6000 rpm.
One bad spark plug, will cause any 4 cylinder engine to run
rough. Not sure what would cause a plug with no gap except for
improper installed or it is the wrong plug (too long insulator) and hit the piston.
The first step is a tuneup, then go from there to solve your rough engine problem.

Do any of you other 3TC folks find it to be a "rough" running engine?
