the ignition key lock cylinder in my 92 corolla went bad, now the key won't turn(the steering wheel is also locked). i am trying to put a new one in, but the key won't turn to the ACC position so i can slip it out and put in the new one.
here's a list of what i did so far:
tried the key jiggle and repeatedly turning the wheel
tried putting wd-40 on the key and in the cylinder
tried using the shift lock override to shift the car in nuetral and repeatedly step 1.
tried pushing in the pin(that releases the cylinder) with alot of force to see if it will break free
got desperate and tried to use a good ole fashion flat head screw driver.
maybe the tumber is finished. The little slides and springs inside can wear out and if the key is to worn out that you car making copies off it won't help. also if the pieces inside are worn where the key goes in they won't be pulled in enough clearing the cylinder so it can slide.
so what you are saying is that the key is stuck in the ACC position???? In that case alltracman78 correct, it wont come out untill it is in the OFF position..

Did you jiggle and twist the steering wheel while turning the key to off?
..... Are you in park?
....Did you push into the column (with the key) while twisting?
l....just stupid questions..

if your trying to replace the key lock cylinder your going to have to remove the steering wheel. Your going to have to disconect the air bag fuses. Be carful when removing the steering wheel, air bags are dangerous, and very expensive to replace.
yea sometimes if the steering wheel locks you need to pull the wheel in the opposite direction to realive some of the stress on the lock to get the key out. I haven't slept and mis read what you said hence my previous statement ahahah

Whoa, whoa.
Disconnect the neg bat terminal.
THEN mess with airbag stuff..
i think you guys are a little confused. the car HAS to be turned to the acc position so that i can slip push in the little pin under the lock cylinder and be able to slip it out. right now it is stuck at the LOCK position and will not budge. and NO you do not need to remove the steering wheel i've done this be fore on a 94 corollas and a few camry's the mechanics are all the same, but you have to get it into the ACC position before that little pin will go in all the way for you to slip it out. and also the car does NOT have airbags. at this point i am going to get a drill and a solid drill bit and just drill carfully through the pin all together, destroying it, which will alow me to get the cylinder out........
^^ That was my next guess.... Just get the pin outta there and then pull the chamber out.
And guys: to get the chamber out you dont need to remove the steering wheel, just the plastic covers around the shaft.
And also: airbags actually have a backup so that if the battery is destroyed they will still deploy, so removing fuses and battery cables wont do it. There is a certain procedure that is needed, so you dont accidentally deploy them...

this happened to my 94 and the guy had to drill out the pin because i split the cylinder with a screw driver trying to mess with it. After it was drilled it just slipped out. My advice go buy 2 or 3 really really good bits. also centerpunch the pin before you try and drill it

If it's auto don't forget the d*** PARK/Safety switch on top of the lock cylinders sometimes the cable hangs up and keeps that thing from allowing proper alignment to the cyl. Whenever I'm around digging in there I disable them by making sure they're all the way up and use #9 Kliens on the cable.
