Don't get me wrong the Corolla S is kind of a fun car. The only one I've ever driven was an automatic and it was a dog, but they are kinda lively wiht a manual. They absolutely need a drop before anything else though. They feel like driving a station wagon with stock suspension.
As far as mild engine mods go, you won't see terrific HP gains, but it will respond much better and sound nice. There is a ton of aftermarket available for the Corolla S, much more than the XRS.
It won't be hard for you to spend a couple grand modding your Corolla with quality namebrand parts from many many aftermarket companies. The XRS has the worst aftermarket support ever and I have mine running the way I want it now, all that is left are wheels, a clutch, and a light flywheel....
Oh and since you are looking at a 9th gen corolla, I highly suggest you go to www. 9th gen corolla .com (without the spaces) it is the most active 9th gen site on the internet and you will find all the answers you need, and can check out what others are doing to their rides.
Here's my car with TRD springs over Koni shocks, and a tint, with the stock XRS wheels
