Magnetic Oil Drain Plug?

Are these worth purchasing? Does anyone have actual experience of them picking up metal particles?

My first oil change inspection of my drain plug after installing one(3K) was a little brown residue on the magnet which wiped off easily!. I have 56K on my car and the plug only cost me $3.50 so I figure it can't hurt and will see if I get more residue as the car gets older, maybe the small amount means my Mobil 1 filter is doing its job...I really don't have an opinion one way or the other, but damn that is one powerful magnet, it stuck to everything on its way in...lol

I don’t think it can hurt. It would be interesting to see what it picked up.

first car

My first car was a VW beetle and the early beetles had a magnetic drain plug instead of an oil filter. Thats right guys, no oil filter. The principal is pretty good, they collect any metal particles out of your oil when you stop the engine and they do work, but really shouldn't be necessary if you've got an oil filter.
And as Raddman says, a little more protection can't hurt

If you like magnets, get some small magnets and put them on your oil filter. You can put magnets on the side of the oil pan also.

They might sell them in an auto parts store but this is where I got mine from!
