Unhappy '00 Corolla Smog failure

took my '00 corolla [69k] in for a smog check.. the HC part failed miserably by like 130 points. everything else is ok.

they want me to do a fuel injection/intake service and replace the sparkplugs (although, i just got new ones in for my 60k service 1 year ago)

haven't done any mods..

funny thing is: i filled up the tank before the test, 28 mpg, after 4 days, i fill it up, 24.2 mpg... shadyyyyyy

suggestions?

thanks.

Nah dude.. I don't think the plugs would have anything to do with it... my bet is they're telling you to replace the plugs and do the cleaning just so they can get the extra money from and THEN tell you it's either the O2 Sensor OR the catalytic converter, which are usually the main causes for emission test failures.

I can't remember exactly which one of the two would cause high HC readings, my mechanic explained it to me before, I think its the cat but don't quote me on this. Anyone else know???

Sometimes it is cheaper and less of a hassle to find some place that will "tweek" it to pass. Ask around, somebody has to have friends in low places. I know someone who did this for 10 years with a gross polluter. Bingo
