I can not find a decent price for a GT-S when this word is in the advertising for the car. It seems the word adds reason for the several thousand dollars more for the car than need be? Anyone else tired of this word? Drifting might be fun but is it really worth Thousands? One could just take an old American RWD car and go drift if they wanted?? Why is it that the small Japanese RWD cars have all this Hype?? Corollas are also fun to drive, even if it is not going slideways. I like going straight forward and just freeway cruz. Seems I'll have to wait for the steam to cool off and hope there are some clean GT-S's left after the Drifting thing is not all the rage??
actually if you really do add teh word drift it help out alot. i just sold one my rwd corollas for a big amount of money for tahyear of 1984 coupe corolla..
you said it there as to why japanese cars are more popular. They are smaller. Weight is your enemy and with a v8 in the american muscle cars it offsets the balance.
but as micro said, mostly comes down to Initial d, and now fast and the furious tokyo drift
but it's not just the ae86 thats priced nuts. Have you priced 240's and miata, people want like 4000 for an old miata. there's a couple cheap 240's around here right now which shocked me! How about the rx7's. They can get pretty pricy, fc's are alright to a point but the fd costs around 18 - 20 000 when they come up on auto trader. I could import one for less then it would cost me to buy one here.

Its because JDM is the hip thing. I wouldnt care if my car weighed alot if I had a v8 in the front. American cars haul ass. I'm planning on importing a mustang from the 60's as soon as the importation law gets loosened.
Plus getting mods for them is easy and cheap. Just order stuff from summit racing.
nah with me it wasn't even the jap cars that made me like the small ones. I went from a mini van to a sunfire gt and a 1990 jetta. I had a blast driving the 2 little cars. I could corner faster and easier while saying in my own lane
v8 doesn't always mean LOTS of power, but than again a 350 is REALLY easy and inexpensive to pull power out of.

1."I can not find a decent price for a GT-S" - and you probably never will
2."Drifting might be fun but is it really worth Thousands?" - depends who you ask
3."One could just take an old American RWD car and go drift if they wanted?" - then give up finding a GT-S and take your own advice
too much complaining about the price of corollas. it's not just because of F&F, there were people playing around with these cars WAYY before drifting was popular. if you cant cough up the cash and compete with the rich kids who get their parents money, then find a different car. unless you want to buy my ae86 gts? it's totally "drift" ready and "JDM" tyte. start the bidding at..hmm...say? 6k? lol..just messin with ya. but if you want some advice on finding a gts from someone who has done it, and done it for way cheaper than you can find on egay and forums, here it is: JUNKYARD. everyone thinks that a 85-87 gts is SOO rare...it's not. the reason you dont see them on the road is cuz they're in the scrapyards. you can pick one up for like 300-400, throw a used motor in:300-400. and there, gts for ~800 bucks.
I have only seen one ae86 in the junkyards in the past year... It's not even that GTS are super rare. there were alot for sale last year. But here it's hard finding them where they are worth buying, usually full of rust. Down in TX I doubt that is as much of a problem? Kind of like a guy I used to work with going down to flordia looking for parts for a 50's car. He said the paint jobs and bodies on these cars were in mint condition.
Sure people played around with rwd and drifting way before it was popular. BUt we are saying it's so expensive because of the JDM craze, Initial d, F&F.
That really was my point. The cars are not that rare they just have a lot of hype inflating their value.
I find the GT-S often enough. It is just the fact when I go to look at the car the person wants me to over look the Missing Pieces, Broken Parts, Lack of a Running Motor, the serious needed paint and body work and pay him his $2500.00 for the Stickers on the side.
I laugh as the next guy in line practically begs the seller to accept his money and thanks him for offering him the chance to buy the POS.
If I were to spend $2500 for a 20 year old car it better run and drive. I am not expecting to find a Flawless Pristine Car and not have to pay for that fact.
What I don't understand is the people that are like the person I just discribed, They are so infatuated with having an AE86 GT-S that they will just become illogical with however much the seller wants for the car. This makes it tough for the rest of us just looking for a Decent ride.
Only imagine if the AE86 would have ever came in a Supercharged or Turbo version...The car's would start out at $10,000 US. So maybe I should be thankful and buy one while they are still are available....lol
My mercury grand marquis was my favorite drifting car. Thing weighed a ton but the v8 does compensate for it And for some good news i finally sold that car
