Generally black smoke is an idication of unburned fuel and blue smoke is from oil and white from coolant.
You have a couple options to see if your car is running rich (burning too much gas) or not.
First have a look at your tailpipe and the area around it. If you see black deposits that is a good indication of a fuel problem.
If you want to be absolutely sure a spark plug check can be done to see exactly how your engine is runnning.
Grab a couple of rags and a spark plug wrench and head to a rural road. Then head off and hold about 4000 rpm or so in third gear for about 2 minutes. now the tricky part. While running turn off the ignition and push in the clutch at the same time. (don't remove the key you still need to steer) then stop. Check you plugs and compare them to the pictures you see in any haynes manual. If they look kind of black and wet you know you are running rich.
To be honest though, I would skip all that work and just take it in to Toyota to get it checked. With all their fancy gadgetry they can probably pinpoint the exact problem. Then I would replace the parts myself.
